High-stim vs moderate-stim vs stim-free

High-stim, moderate-stim and stim-free are commercial positions on a pre-workout line. They change caffeine, who drinks the product, what else fits in the scoop, and how the pack is sold.

High-stim, moderate-stim and stim-free describe how a pre-workout is sold, not a single caffeine number that every factory uses. High-stim leads with a strong caffeine-led session. Moderate-stim is the everyday gym drink. Stim-free takes caffeine off the headline and lets pump, focus or endurance carry the tub.

Pick the position before you pick the milligrams. A brand that wants one SKU for mixed training times usually belongs in moderate-stim. A brand that wants a loud evening product can go high-stim. A brand that sells to late trainers, pregnant-adjacent shoppers you will not caffeine, or people who already drink coffee, needs a stim-free that is a real formula. Not a decaf sticker on the same art.

High-stim as a position

High-stim sells the session feel. Caffeine is the first line on the panel. Other stimulants only appear if your market allows them and you can defend the label. The rest of the formula has less room. A heavy carbohydrate layer or a full hydration stack in the same scoop fights bitterness and serving weight. Many high-stim SKUs keep pump moderate and flavour loud, because the customer came for the hit, not for 8 g of citrulline.

Warnings, serving instructions and “do not exceed” language get longer. Retail and online ads get tighter. A high-stim SKU is a poor first product if your customers train at 20:00 and still need to sleep. It is a strong second SKU next to a moderate hero. Flavour should cover caffeine harshness without turning the drink into cough syrup. We taste the full caffeine dose. A half-scoop sample lies.

Moderate-stim as the workhorse

Moderate-stim is where most private-label gym lines should start. Caffeine is present and named. It is not the only story. You still have room for a pump system, a small focus pair (often caffeine with L-theanine), or a light electrolyte cut. Repeat use is the test. If the same person cannot drink it on a Tuesday lunch session, you built a weekend product and called it daily.

This position also travels better into more markets. Caffeine warnings still apply. They are shorter than a high-stim panel. Flavour can be candy or a more adult citrus. Serving can sit in a tub at 300 finished units per flavour, or in sticks at 5,000 finished units if you want a fixed commute dose. Sticks punish a moderate formula that quietly grew to 22 g because every layer was “just a little”.

Stim-free has to earn the scoop

Without caffeine, the customer still expects a reason to mix the drink. Pump-led stim-free is the common answer: more citrulline, glycerol or nitrates, a flavour that can hide those materials, and a serving that is often larger than the caffeinated twin. Focus-led stim-free uses tyrosine, L-theanine or a choline source. Wording stays inside what those ingredients may say. We will not print cognition-treatment language to replace the missing caffeine story.

A stim-free SKU next to a caffeinated SKU should share flavour language and pack shape so the shelf reads as a pair. The formulas will still differ in weight, acidity and cost. Budget for two developments. Copy-paste is how you get a watery drink that reviews as “does nothing” next to a sibling that reviews as “too much”.

Line architecture

One position is enough for a first launch. Two positions is a line. Three positions is a catalogue. If you want all three, give each a job and a customer. Do not launch high, mid and free on the same day with the same flavour and the same price. Retailers will pick one. The other two sit.

Configure the stim tier, lead layer, serving and pack in the pre-workout builder. We quote each SKU on its own specification. Jars, tubs and pouches start at 300 finished units per product and flavour. Sticks start at 5,000 finished units. The position you chose should still be readable after the quote, not only on the moodboard.
