How pre-workout formulas are structured
A pre-workout is a stack of layers: energy, pump, focus and endurance. Stimulant tier, serving size and pack decide which layers can be honest in one scoop.

A pre-workout is the drink taken before a training session. The formula is not one ingredient list copied from a US tub. It is four layers that share one scoop: energy, pump, focus and endurance. The brief names which layers lead. The rest stay small or stay out.
Start with the session and the customer, not with milligrams. A lunchtime gym member, an evening lifter, a Hyrox heat and a late indoor-cycle class are different products. They can share a flavour family. They should not share a default stack.
The four layers
Energy is usually caffeine, sometimes with other stimulants where the market allows them. It also covers materials people feel as “work capacity” in the gym, such as beta-alanine. Those are not the same job. Caffeine is a stimulant position. Beta-alanine is a tingling endurance material with a taste and a paresthesia story you have to want.
Pump is the blood-flow and fullness layer: citrulline, glycerol, nitrates, sometimes a smaller arginine cut. These materials are bulky. They fight the scoop more than caffeine does. Focus is tyrosine, L-theanine, sometimes a choline source. It is a flavour and label problem as much as a formula problem. Endurance is beta-alanine, taurine, a light carbohydrate or an electrolyte cut when the session sweats. Creatine can sit here or in a separate daily product. Putting 5 g of creatine in a sour 12 g pre-workout stick is how you lose both jobs.
Stimulant tiers
High-stim, moderate-stim and stim-free are commercial positions. They change who buys the tub and what else fits. High-stim leads with a clear caffeine load. The other layers must stay drinkable next to that bitterness and that legal warning block. Moderate-stim is the everyday gym SKU: enough caffeine for a session, room for pump or flavour, and a chance the same person uses it four times a week. Stim-free drops caffeine as the headline. Pump and focus have to carry the product. That usually means a larger serving or a tighter flavour brief.
Do not treat a stim-free SKU as the high-stim formula minus caffeine. Bitterness, colour and sweetness all shift. A pump-led stim-free often needs more citrulline or glycerol than the caffeinated twin. That changes serving weight and pack. Plan two formulas, or accept that one of them is a compromise.
What the pack does to the formula
Jars, tubs and pouches start at 300 finished units per product and flavour. Stick packs start at 5,000 finished units. A stick locks the dose. That is useful for travel and for a controlled caffeine number. It punishes a 25 g pump formula. A tub lets you run a larger scoop. It also lets customers double scoop, which your caffeine warning should assume they might.
Flavour has to match the layer that leads. High citrulline is hard to hide in a light citrus. Glycerol changes mouthfeel. Nitrates can dirt-taste. Beta-alanine adds sour-savoury notes. We flavour at the full serving in the printed water volume. A 5 g tasting sample hides everything that will go wrong in a 400 ml shaker.
A brief that we can make
Cost is a layer too. Citrulline, glycerol and branded caffeines move the kilo price faster than flavour. A brief that wants every layer “clinical” and a supermarket retail price is two briefs. Choose the layer you will pay for. The others stay honest at a smaller gram weight, or they stay out of the scoop.
Name the lead layer, the stim tier, caffeine milligrams if you already care, two or three must-have materials, flavour direction, serving weight and pack. Say which market the label must pass. We will not copy a US proprietary blend onto an EU or UK pack and call it done. Configure those choices in the pre-workout builder. Then we quote manufacturing on a specification with real grams, not a screenshot of another brand.

High-stim vs moderate-stim vs stim-free
High-stim, moderate-stim and stim-free are commercial positions on a pre-workout line. They change caffeine, who drinks the product, what else fits in the scoop, and how the pack is sold.

Hybrid performance formulation
A hybrid performance product joins two jobs that already exist on their own: hydration with creatine, protein with coffee, protein with electrolytes, carbohydrate with electrolytes, focus with energy, or recovery with hydration. It is a combined SKU, not a new science category.
