Complete meal vs meal replacement
A complete meal powder and a meal replacement are different commercial and legal jobs. One is a balanced shake a brand can sell as a convenient meal-style serving. The other follows meal-replacement rules in the target country. They are not interchangeable names.

A complete meal powder is a shake or bowl mix with protein, carbohydrate, fat and usually fibre in one serving, at a calorie level that can stand in for a meal in everyday use. A meal replacement is a regulated product type in many markets, with vitamin and mineral levels, energy bands and wording that the law sets. Calling a high-protein sports shake a meal replacement because it is filling does not make it one.
Fix the target market before you fix macros. An EU or UK meal-replacement file is a different project from a sports “complete meal” SKU sold as convenient nutrition. We will not write fat-loss, slimming or “replace dinner to cut weight” language on either product. Those claims are not a sports nutrition brief we will manufacture against.
Complete meal as a sports SKU
Sports brands use complete meal powders for travel, a desk lunch, or a day when cooking is not realistic. The serving usually carries a clear protein number, a carbohydrate source (oats, maltodextrin, a rice fraction, depending on texture), a fat source, and fibre. Flavour has to work in water and often in milk. Texture is closer to a thick shake or a drinkable porridge than to a 30 g whey scoop.
Vitamins and minerals can be added as a brand choice. They are not automatically at meal-replacement levels. Saying “complete” on pack is still a wording risk. We check it against the market. A safer commercial line is often a named use (breakfast powder, on-the-go meal shake) plus a transparent macro table. Do not promise that one scoop covers every nutrient a dietitian would put in a plate.
Meal replacement as a legal job
In the EU, meal replacement for weight control is a defined foods-for-specific-groups area with composition rules (energy, protein quality, fat, fibre, vitamins, minerals) and restricted claims. The UK has its own file after exit. Other countries use other names and other tables. If you want that badge, the formula is written to the regulation first and to flavour second. You cannot reverse into compliance by adding a vitamin premix to a dessert protein.
Even inside that category, slimming testimonials and “lose X kg” language stay out of our pack copy. The regulation is about composition and limited wording, not about turning a powder into a diet clinic. If your commercial plan needs aggressive weight language, that is not a Sports Nutrition Co. manufacturing brief.
Macros, flavour and pack
A complete meal serving is larger than a whey scoop. Expect more powder, more carbohydrate sweetness, and a fat system that can go rancid if the pack and antioxidant brief are weak. Chocolate and vanilla still lead. Savoury meal powders exist. They are a different flavour project. Mixing instructions must name liquid volume. A 90 g serve in 200 ml is paste. The same serve in 400 ml is a drink.
Pouches and tubs start at 300 finished units per product and flavour. Sticks or sachets start at 5,000 finished units. A true meal serving rarely fits a 40 g stick. If you want a sachet, accept a smaller “mini meal” and do not call it a meal replacement unless the file matches.
How to brief us
Protein source follows the same honesty as a shake. Whey and milk protein are the usual dairy base. Plant systems work if you accept a different thickness and a different flavour load. Do not mix five protein sources to look complete on a blog. Two well-chosen sources plus a starch and a fat are enough for most SKUs. Fibre dose should help the drink, not turn it into gel in the shaker.
Name the country, complete meal or meal replacement, calorie band, protein grams, drinkable versus thick, flavour, and pack. Say you do not need weight-loss claims. Configure the direction in meal nutrition. We quote a specification that can be labelled in that market, not a US complete-food screenshot translated into Dutch.
